2017 has been a year which has constantly reminded us about our PC security in the form of various malware attacks (especially ransomware) that bombarded enterprise networks and individual users alike. These security attacks served as a crude reminder that our PC(s) should at least contain the basic form of protection – the antivirus – in order to successfully combat these attacks. Therefore before this year winds up, we decided to take a look at some of the antivirus programs (including our very own Comodo) which have withstood these attacks and therefore are AV(s) which users can install in order to safeguard their PC(s) in the upcoming year. But before we start, a look at the factors which influenced our thoughts.
Why We Chose What We Chose Following factors were taken into consideration before deciding the top 5 antivirus programs of this year. User Interface: Just like any other software, an easy user interface is critical for antivirus packages as well. Because no matter how sophisticated the technology employed, if an antivirus package does not have an easily understandable user interface, all will be lost, as the users won’t be able to take the necessary actions. Speed (Detection Rates): Yes speed matters.
Especially considering the rate at which the modern-day malware is evolving. Antivirus packages have to act quickly in stopping malware in its tracks before it does the damage. Accuracy: Throwing up a lot of false positives will only make users lose faith in antivirus packages. Therefore accuracy is critical and was taken into consideration. Success Rate Against Evolving Malware: Most of the successful malware are new ones (zero-day malware) which cannot be predicted that easily. So success rate against evolving malware was our final consideration.
Scanning your PC for viruses with Avast Antivirus. Boot-Time Scan: scans your PC during the next system startup before any malware is launched. Scanning during startup improves the chances of detecting and removing malware before it can counteract. Avast Free Antivirus 17.x; Microsoft Windows 10 Home / Pro / Enterprise / Education - 32.
AVG Free Antivirus We had no issues giving this antivirus the No.1 spot. Becuase it easily beat others hands down. Appeals to both tech-savvy and ‘just being cautious’ PC users. Has enough rich features which can make users go ‘is this really available for free!’. Above all, has the potential to successfully combat the ever-evolving modern-day malware. Features That Create The Difference:.
Default Deny Approach: making use of this technology (which is unique to Comodo), this antivirus package ensures all kinds of security threats are denied entry by default – until they are proven harmless. A pretty useful feature. Containment and HIPS: equipped with containment, this package can successfully ‘contain’ new malware, run it in a separate environment without affecting user PC(s).
And HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System) does a great job in performing comprehensive scans of PC(s) and detecting any suspicious activity. Protection Against Fileless Malware: fileless malware can be hard to detect as it can successfully operate without leaving behind any traces. Comodo antivirus helps you successfully detect such fileless malware as well. Ability To Handle Zero-Day Malware: majority of the security havoc is caused by unknown malware (or zero-day malware) which hasn’t been previously detected and therefore is hard to predict.
Comodo antivirus has enough features which ensure zero-day malware is dealt with properly. This is what truly sets this antivirus apart from the others in the IT security industry.
Kaspersky Antivirus Despite being banned by the US government, this antivirus software still commands respect in the IT security community. Pretty effective against malware, it also safeguards against identity theft along with securing your online financial processing as well. Features That Create The Difference:. Being the most installed antivirus product, no free antivirus program list would be complete without Avast Free Antivirus receiving a mention.
Features That Create The Difference:. Heuristic Engine: to detect previously unknown security threats. Home Network Security Feature: which can scan your network to find infections and vulnerabilities, such as identifying routers that are using default passwords and checking if your network is accessible from the Internet or not.

McAfee is nothing but good. So, uninstall it! Or better saying, clean uninstall both the antiviruses, and reinstall avast again. Even if you keep McAfee, it's license with expire after some time! But, anyway, if you are so obsessed and want only to disable it, I can give you some tips!
To disable it, means you have to disable all his services and autorun services. Follow this steps: 1. In the search bar type: msconfig 3. Go to services tab, and disable all that have to do with McAfee 4. Go to startup tab, and disable all those that have to do with McAfee again. Click OK & restart! Done Hope this helped!

I highly suggest not running both, just becomes laggy. Go start - Run- msconfig - Startp, and deselct Mcafee. This wills top it from running on startup, thus helping the overload. Other option is to uninstall Mcafee, just make sure you have some install files lying around. Recover the CD Key, and when uninstalling it normally asks if you would like to keep the user settings etc. Other option, bugger what they are telling you at school.
Use mcafee, I have had very few problems with it. If you are really worried about the virus, ask them the name of the virus and strain, then do some research and see if Mcafee catches it.
I would get rid of McAfee completely as it is somewhat of a resource hog and, sadly, the free version of Avast works better at scanning and removing viruses and malware. If you want to just deactivate McAfee, as it will conflict with any other antivirus software, go here and follow the instructions:. You could try going into the services and disable all associated services from starting, but not sure if it would conflict with anything or pop ups would come up staying that McAfee could not start properly and must reinstall it.
